From 2026 onwards, LEG Kommunal GmbH (LEG K) – an SHS Strukturholding Saar company – and the municipalities involved will take over responsibility for organising the ‘Exchange of Experiences in Urban and Municipal Development in Saarland’ event series from IHK Saarland, who temporarily continued the event in Saarbrücken in 2024 and 2025 after nearly twenty years of organisation by GIU mbH. They will receive substantive support from a steering committee made up of experts from the municipality and the Saarland Ministry of the Interior, Construction and Sport.
The event series covers the topic of urban development funding, which has been a tried-and-tested federal-state programme for more than 50 years and is therefore a targeted structural support measure that forms a central component of urban and municipal development policy in the state and in Saarland’s cities and municipalities. The event programme kicks off on 3 February 2026 with a joint event at Saarbrücken Airport with the Ministry of the Interior, Construction and Sport, providing an introduction to the latest topics and innovations from urban development funding. A total of six events are planned so far for 2026, covering topics that include safety and order, sustainability, participatory processes, vacancy rates, and social change. Some of the network events are being organised in conjunction with IHK Saarland.
CEO of LEG Kommunal Andreas Storb emphasised the event series’s proven foundation for the municipalities of Saarland: ‘For more than 20 years, the Exchange of Experiences event has established a position as a network of representatives of Saarland municipalities, the Ministry of the Interior, Construction and Sport, and the Chamber of Industry and Commerce, as well as other experts.’ For co-CEO Britta Lösing, the primary point of interest is the benefit of networking events for the target groups, promoting active discussion on current topics in urban and municipal development – as a result, these events provide information, networking and further training opportunities, guidance, and decision-making support for participants.
Urban development funding has been helping to tackle functional and urban development issues at municipal level since 1971. There are various ways in which the funds can be deployed by municipalities. ‘To ensure continuity of organisation, LEG K will also be organising the event series with the current partners in 2027 and aims to continue doing so in the future’, the CEOs emphasised.
